What Green Bay Homeowners Need to Know about Asphalt Shingles
Everyone can identify asphalt shingles on a roof, but if asked what they’re made of most people fumble for an answer and can only come up with “asphalt.” That’s only partly correct. Asphalt shingles are actually flat rectangular pieces of composite material consisting of:
- An organic or fiberglass base mat
- A coating of adhesive asphalt
- A granular layer of sand, mica, vitrified brick or similar
Types of Asphalt Shingles
There are two standard design options for asphalt shingles:
- 3-Tab shingles are simple, cost-effective and all the same size and shape. They’re a popular option for homeowners looking for the best value. They come in a wide range of colors.
- Architectural or Dimensional shingles are stronger, thicker and come in a variety of sizes and shapes for a more textured look. Architectural shingles cost more to install than 3-tab shingles, but last longer and have better manufacturer warranties.
It’s worth taking a closer look at the two types of base mat used in shingles—those made with a fiberglass mat and those made with an organic base mat.
Fiberglass-based shingles are becoming increasingly popular nationwide, largely because they resist fire better than organic mat shingles, which burn easily because they’re made from wood fiber or waste paper that has been soaked in asphalt. The primary benefit of organic shingles in our area is that they’re more pliable and withstand cold and windy weather better than fiberglass shingles.
Something else to consider: because asphalt shingles are made with a petroleum-based product, they aren’t recyclable and it takes a lot of energy to make them. If having a “green” house is really important to you, we’d recommend a metal or stone coated steel roof over an asphalt shingle roof.
