Built-Up Roofing (BUR)

Built-Up Roofing (BUR) Installation and Repair

Built-up roofing, or BUR for short, is one of the more affordable roofing systems around, and one that’s been around for quite a while. A BUR roof consists of several layers of asphalt roofing material with a layer of tar and gravel on top. This results in a very heavy roofing system that requires a roof with adequate support. On the plus side, though, built-up roofing provides excellent thermal insulation and it makes for a great looking roof.

Built-up roofing is not something we often recommend for a roof replacement. In too many cases, a building’s roof has to be reinforced before a built-up roof can be installed. The cost of doing this just adds too much to the final cost. However, if you’re looking to have new building roofed, built-up roofing is certainly a good option to consider. One thing to consider, though, is that a BUR roof typically lasts 15 to 20 years, which is less than other roofing systems. The service life can be extended by applying a UV protective coating every 3 to 5 years to reduce UV damage.

Overhead Solutions can take a look at your roof and let you know if BUR is a viable material, as well as provide other options for you to consider. Our team of Green Bay roofers install and maintain BUR systems for businesses all over northeast Wisconsin with exceptional attention to detail. From Sturgeon Bay in Door County to Oshkosh in the Fox Valley, we have a long list of satisfied customers. Get in touch with us to request a free estimate.
